Rant

I went to my parent's today, and my sister was there. The three of us talked for a while, and then my sister went to her room and returned with a piece of paper. It was a petition asking the Congress not to approve the law that will allow gay couples to adopt kids. I obviously refused to sign it, and my mom's jaw almost hit the floor.
The conversation went something like this:

MOM: Why won't you sign it?
ME: Because I think that law should be approved.
MOM: How can you say that? How can you think that a gay couple could properly raise a child?
ME: I'm not saying ALL gay couples should be allowed to adopt, just the ones that can provide the kid with a stable, loving home. Same goes for straight couples.
SISTER: Gay couples can't provide a stable home environment. Those kids wouldn't have a shot to a normal life, they'd get picked on at school, would grow up thinking that it's normal to be gay, and would be prone to be gay themselves.
*Mom nods*
ME: Kids get picked on for a number of reasons, it's almost inevitable. And if people weren't as ignorant and intolerant as you are, that wouldn't even be an issue. There's absolutely nothing wrong with being gay, it's a sexual preference, that doesn't make them better or worse people. A person is so much more than who they sleep with or love. Also, *gets interrupted by mom*
MOM: HOW CAN YOU SAY THAT? It's not normal, is not the way god intended it to be, it's unnatural, not no mention a sin.
ME: Mom, almost everything we do is a sin. Being gay doesn't even make it to the Ten Commandments. Besides if we were to ban sinners to adopt children, NOBODY would be able to adopt.
SISTER: It's so sad that you'd rather please society than god. If they want to be gay then it's their business, but they should deal with the consequences of their choices, like not being able to have kids.
ME: This is pointless, I'm out of here.

I love my family more than anything, they're amazing, but they're extremely religious (catholics) and sometimes they are plain ridiculous. They follow the "hate the sin, love the sinner" philosophy, to which I agree wholeheartedly, even if sometimes I disagree as to what is a sin and what isn't; but they fail to realize that in this particular situation, they're actively acting against the "sinners", not the "sin", because they're trying to deny them the possibility of having a family as a punishment for their lifestyle choice.

Sorry for this rant, I needed to get it out of my chest because I'm sure that if I talked to my RL friends about it, they'd side with my mom and sister, and I don't want to be mad at them too.

Also, I won't be offended if you point out how stupid they are, because it's the truth.

Have an amazing weekend!

Man, I can't believe I have to put on my righteous anger face twice in a week. Damn girl, that is hard. Religion really messes with people's abilities to treat other human beings as well, human beings.

It sucks that you had to go through that and be at odds with people you love but I'm so proud that you stuck to your guns. Perhaps you'll have to use their logic and love them despite their "sins".

And don't apologise for ranting. What are LJ's for if not to get stuff of your chest?

Me enfurece.

Thanks honey. Actually I feel a lot better today, because my little sister called me and told me that my other sister had asked my brother to sign the petition, and that my brother told her that he couldn't, because he was colecting signatures for his own petition, one to ban stupidity and intolerance.
I would've loved to see my sister's indignant face.
I love my brother, he's the best.

I don't want to spend a lot of time and space ranting the way I always want to when I hear things like this, I just want to say that I hope to any and all gods out there that I live to see the day when people who think that way are the VAST minority.
