I need your advice!
Jan. 21st, 2010 01:08 amOkay, so I've been sick a lot in the last 2 or 3 years. I've gone to several doctors, and some of them told me that I was fine, while others diagnosed me but the meds they gave me haven't worked so far (but I'm still taking them).
I don't suffer from any serious disease or anything, but still my mom is very worried about me. She made me an appointment with a "doctor" today, some kind of alternate medicine, and he didn't diagnose me at all but he told me he'll cure me from everything. The thing is, he wants me to stop taking my real meds so I'll know it's his meds what's making me better and not the other ones.
I don't believe in alt. medicine, but my mom begged me to give it a chance. I'm afraid of stop taking my meds because sometimes when you stop taking them before you finish the treatment, you become immune to them. And what if the alternative stuff don't work? Then my real meds won't work either and I'll be royally screwed.
Does any of you have any experience with alt. medicine that you can share with me? Does it work? Should I stop taking my meds and give the ~natural stuff a chance?
I hope you can help me, I really don't know what to do.
Love you all,
Laura.

Date: 2010-01-21 09:22 am (UTC)There is also the option (and I am hesitant to suggest this as they always say don't trust Dr Google) of searching online for information about your meds and seeing if there is anything listed about stopping them vs easing off them.
I was in a similar situation to you a few years ago where I had a recurring condition that various medical doctors I saw just weren't able to help with. I went to a naturopath and she took me off the pill and put me on expensive herbs and really tough diet. I stuck it out for a full year and it did absolutely nothing (though I did lose 5 kilos). In the end I went to back a doctor (a good one) and he was able to sort me out. But the years up until that point were really hard and frustrating.
I'm not saying alt medicine doesn't work, I have friends who swear by it - but you are right to be careful about going on/off medication that's been subscribed by a doctor. It's not something to do lightly. Do whatever research, talk to whoever you need to talk to, to feel like you're making an informed decision.
Hope it all works out hon. *hugs*

Es tomar un riesgo, pero si crees que vale la pena intentar a ver si te puedes curar, entonces tómalo.
